2 women unpacking in their new home - Mayflower

As you prepare to move into your new home, the excitement of a fresh start can quickly turn from exciting to overwhelming. With countless details to manage, it’s easy to overlook essential items that will make the move to your new space well-planned and stress-free.

Because you’re already looking at your move options, we’ll assume you already have furniture, electronics and other personal belongings that will be used in your new space. For this article we’ll focus on the basics — from basic cleaning supplies to often-forgotten essentials — you should have handy on move-in day and beyond. Let’s dive in.

    1. The Basics

Every well-planned move should include a first night box filled with items you’re sure to need right away. Stock up on all-purpose cleaners, sponges, and microfiber cloths, as well as non-perishable foods you may need until your refrigerator is up and running.

    2. Toolkit

A basic toolkit is essential for tackling the types of quick fixes and simple DIY projects you encounter when you first move in. Here’s what it should contain:

    • Screwdrivers (flathead and Phillips head)
    • Claw hammer
    • Tape measure
    • Pliers (regular and needle-nosed)
    • Utility knives and blades
    • Adjustable wrenches
    • Level
    • Electrical tape

Tip: Spend a little extra for a large toolbox (you’ll soon fill it up).

    3. Kitchen Items

As part of your pre-move downsizing, you should have already discarded, sold or donated any kitchen items that are in poor condition, duplicated of that won’t fit into your new space. Moving is the perfect time to start fresh with new cookware, utensils, and dinnerware that not only signal a “new beginning” but also match your new decor. You’ll also have fewer items to pack and unpack.

      4. Storage Solutions

Organizing your new space will be much easier if you have a place for everything! Invest in shelving units and organizers to maximize space and minimize clutter right from the start. Check out these useful tips for preventing future clutter pileups

        5. Fire Extinguishers

Safety first! For your main home protection, install an extinguisher on every floor level. For additional protection, FEMA offers a guide to the types of extinguishers you’ll find most useful. Hint: you should also register every extinguisher with its manufacturer to stay abreast of any future recalls or updates.

          6. A First-Aid Kit

Whether it’s used to treat a stubbed toe or something more serious, it’s always smart to have a first-aid kit handy, especially during and right after you move. Medicine.net has put together a comprehensive list of 27 items every well-equipped first-aid kit should contain.

            7. Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

These devices can literally save lives. Make sure they are installed throughout your home as soon as possible. For an overview and impartial reviews of the best choices available, check out these recommendations from Consumer Reports

              8. Window Treatments

Nobody wants to be totally “on view” to the entire neighborhood! Until you have time to thoroughly decorate your new space, ensure your privacy and control the amount of natural light with basic curtains or blinds. You can always upgrade later.

                9. Lighting Fixtures

Ceiling lights can only accomplish so much. Until you’re fully unpacked, you can create a bit of aesthetic ambiance with a mix of overhead and task lighting.

                10. Furniture Basics

Even if your things are being stored temporarily, you need more than a card table and folding chairs to see you through. When setting up your new living space, prioritize comfort and functionality. Start with a cozy sofa or sectional as your centerpiece. Add a coffee table for practicality and style, along with side tables for lamps and decor. Comfortable mattress and supportive pillows are non-negotiable for quality sleep. In the bedroom dress your bed with soft sheets, a warm comforter and extra blankets. And don’t forget hangers and organizers to keep your closet tidy and functional.

                Above all, give yourself time

Remember that creating a comfortable living space doesn’t have to happen overnight. This comprehensive checklist will help ensure you have all the essentials covered until you have the time and budget to transform your house into a home.
